Introducing PaperCheck 3.0
PaperCheck 3.0
Hey everyone, Yves here. We've spent the past few months rebuilding PaperCheck and I'm excited to share what we've been working on. Version 3.0 is a major upgrade across the board — a completely new interface, stronger analysis tools, and several features our users have been asking for. Here's what's changed.
What's new at a glance
- Redesigned app — New layout, navigation, sidebar, and feedback views
- Defense Studio voice sessions — Practice your defense out loud with a real-time AI examiner
- Plagiarism check — Scans your text against external sources and flags potential matches
- Bibliography verification — Cross-checks your references against OpenAlex, Open Libary and web sources
- Adjustable feedback depth — Switch between Quick Review, Default, and Deep Review
- Improved proofreading — Structured feedback view alongside the classic markdown format
- Same pricing — All new features are included in existing plans
Redesigned from the ground up
We rebuilt the entire interface. The new sidebar keeps your papers, analyses, and uploads organized in one place with a paper switcher and version history. Navigation between your feedback, defense preparation, to-do list, and checks now happens from a persistent sidebar instead of bouncing between disconnected pages. The layout is fully responsive on mobile, and we've redesigned the history, payments, and upload pages as well.
Defense Studio: real-time voice sessions
The Defense Studio now supports improved live voice practice sessions. When you start a session, PaperCheck acts as an examiner — it pulls questions generated from your actual thesis analysis, asks them one at a time, listens to your spoken answers, and gives you feedback before moving to the next question.
Sessions include a live audio waveform visualizer, a 20-minute time cap per analysis, built-in noise reduction, and the ability to review your session history and listen back to your recorded answers afterwards. The feature supports both English and German.

Plagiarism checking
One of our most requested features. PaperCheck now runs a plagiarism check on your paper's body text. Each match includes a similarity score and the source URL, so you can review the flagged sections and decide if they need attention.
Each match shows the similarity score and the original source
Bibliography verification
Every reference in your bibliography is now automatically verified against external databases. PaperCheck extracts your references, resolves them through OpenAlex (for academic papers and journals), Open Library (for books), and web search as a fallback. For each entry, we check whether the source actually exists, whether it's accessible online, and whether the title and authors match what you cited. References that can't be verified or that have mismatches are flagged in your report.
This covers DOI resolution, author name matching, title similarity scoring, and special handling for ASTM standards, grey literature, and webpage references.
Adjustable feedback depth
You can now control how detailed your feedback is. A new depth switcher in the feedback view lets you choose between three levels:
- Quick Review — High-level overview, key issues only
- Default — Balanced detail
- Deep Review — Thorough, granular analysis of every section
This is currently in beta and works alongside the new structured feedback view, which presents your feedback in an organized, section-by-section format instead of the classic markdown layout. You can switch between the two views at any time.

To-do lists
After receiving your feedback, you can now generate a to-do list tied to specific deadlines. PaperCheck groups the tasks by category, lets you expand individual items for detail, check them off as you go, and mark everything as solved when you're done. It's a practical way to stay on track during revisions.
More improvements
- Guided first-time upload flow — New users are walked through the upload, checks, and payment steps
- Share as image — Save and share a snapshot of your feedback results
- GBP and CAD currency support — In addition to EUR, CHF, and USD
- Improved custom checks — Raised limits to 18 for Plus and 45 for Ultimate plans
- Session continuity — Your sidebar context (selected paper, analysis, upload) persists across page navigations
Same price
All of these features — the redesign, Defense Studio voice sessions, plagiarism check, bibliography verification, and adjustable feedback depth — are included in existing plans at no additional cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the plagiarism check included in my current plan? Yes. All new features in 3.0 are available within your existing plan when doing a new upload.
Q: How does the voice defense session work? It uses OpenAI's Realtime API. PaperCheck generates defense questions from your thesis analysis, then conducts a live voice conversation where it asks questions, listens to your answers, and gives feedback. Each analysis has a 20-minute session cap.
Q: What does the bibliography verification check? It verifies each reference against OpenAlex, Open Library, Semantic Scholar, and web search. It checks whether the source exists, is accessible, and whether the title and authors match your citation.
Q: Can I switch between the structured and classic feedback views? Yes. You can toggle between the structured (section-by-section) view and the classic markdown view at any time in the feedback page.
