Upload and Settings Guide for Better PaperCheck Results
The quality of the feedback you receive depends heavily on providing the right context. We have designed the upload process to be intuitive, yet flexible enough to handle the specific nuances of different academic levels and disciplines.
This guide will walk you through the entire process, from preparing your document to configuring the specific settings that guide the AI's analysis.
Step 1: Prepare Your Document for Submission
Before you initiate an upload, it is crucial to ensure your document is ready for a comprehensive review. The AI works best when given a clean, structured file.
Supported File Formats
We currently support the standard formats used in academia worldwide:
- PDF (
.pdf): Highly recommended as it preserves all your formatting, spacing, and layout exactly as the examiners will see it. - Word Document (
.docx): Also fully supported if you prefer to upload your working draft.
Document Cleanup checklist
Before uploading, run through this quick checklist to ensure a smooth analysis:
- Remove Tracked Changes: If you are using Word, ensure all tracked changes are either accepted or rejected.
- Finalize Reference Lists: Ensure your bibliography or reference list is relatively complete, even if you are still tweaking minor citations.
- Check File Size Constraints: Depending on your account package or available credits, ensure your file size and character count do not exceed the limits.
Step 2: Configure Your Analysis Context
To give you the most accurate and relevant feedback, PaperCheck does not use a one-size-fits-all approach. The system needs to understand the exact context of your work. When you start an upload, you will be prompted to configure several critical settings.
Selecting the Document Type
The expectations for a short term paper are vastly different from those of a doctoral dissertation. By selecting the correct document type, the AI calibrates its strictness, depth of feedback, and structural expectations.
Common document types include:
- Bachelor Thesis: The AI will focus heavily on foundational academic writing skills, basic structural flow, and adherence to standard citation rules.
- Master Thesis: The AI increases its rigor, looking for deeper analytical depth, critical engagement with literature, and complex argumentation.
- Term Paper / Seminar Paper: Feedback will be more concise, focusing on clarity, focused argumentation, and immediate formatting fixes.
- Dissertation: The highest level of scrutiny, expecting exceptional clarity, original contribution framing, and flawless academic tone.
Setting the Document Language or Spelling Variant
PaperCheck supports multiple language and spelling variants. Select the option that best matches your paper so grammar, spelling, and phrasing can be evaluated accurately.
- English variants: PaperCheck can evaluate the spelling and usage conventions required by your document, such as US English.
- German variants: PaperCheck can evaluate formal academic German, including the spelling and terminology conventions expected in your context, such as Swiss Standard German.
Step 3: The Upload Process
Once your settings are dialed in, adding your document to PaperCheck is seamless.

You have two simple options:
- Drag and Drop: Simply click and drag your PDF or DOCX file directly into the designated upload area on the screen.
- File Browser: Click the upload area to open your system's file browser and manually select the document.
What Happens During the Analysis?
The moment your file is uploaded, PaperCheck takes over. This is not a simple spell check; it is a deep, multi-layered review of your academic work.
The Scanning Phases
- Text Extraction: The system reads your document, identifying headings, paragraphs, citations, and the bibliography.
- Structural Analysis: PaperCheck evaluates the logical flow from your introduction through your methodology and findings, down to your conclusion.
- Linguistic Review: A thorough check of grammar, spelling, and academic tone is performed simultaneously.
- Citation Cross-Referencing: PaperCheck checks your in-text citations against your bibliography to ensure consistency and proper formatting.
Depending on the length and complexity of your paper, this entire process usually takes just a few minutes. You can monitor the progress directly on the screen.
Once the review is complete, you will automatically be redirected to the Analysis Overview page, where your personalized feedback awaits.
